Mr G Kandasamy, our former General Secretary and Executive Counsellor passed away on 20 March 1999.
He founded AUPE on 26 September 1959 and was the General Secretary till 1995. His pioneering efforts in building the largest public sector union in Singapore will not be forgotten. He left a legacy which present leaders of AUPE must not only preserve but build upon it.
"We will remember him as one who gave everything to look after the interest and welfare of workers, especially public employees for more than 50 years. He made enormous sacrifices to build the Union and we cannot thank him enough. He was our leader, mentor, guide and friend. Truly, Kanda is the Father of AUPE."
These words were said by AUPE General Secretary, Mr Paul Tan, in his eulogy at the funeral service of the late G Kandasamy. He added that Kanda's advice to his younger colleagues is that one must live by one's conscience and principles. If we honestly feel that what we have done is right according to our conscience and principles, we can face the world and walk tall.
Mr Kandasamy's life and his sacrifices have been recorded in his biography, "That Fellow Kanda" published by AUPE to commemorate his golden jubilee as a trade unionist. Copies of the biography are available at AUPE Headquarters at $15/- per copy. All proceeds would go into the G Kandasamy Endowment Fund which is set up to help members' children who study in the Institute of Technical Education, Polytechnics, National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. |
